16.6” English Viola by John Wilkinson, London c.1950, Unlabelled.

John Wilkinson started of as a violinist, but after a war injury turned to violin making and restoration with the aid of a splint. A prolific maker, he produced over 900 instruments, most of which are either unlabelled, or labelled with names relating to the models he was copying from. He tended to use the same template for most of his work. He was more imitator than forger, but otherwise his work can be mistaken for that of the Voller brothers. An enigmatic maker, this viola is a lovely example of Wilkinson's work in excellent condition.
