Matthew Hardie was an important and influential violin maker who has been called the "Scottish Stradivari" Born in Jedburgh in 1754, he trained as a joiner before a stint in the army and then a shift to musical instrument making. Although the basis of his training is unknown, experts have drawn parallels between his work and that of Vincenzo Panormo and John Betts. Whilst his early career showed great promise, constant financial trouble and personal set backs contributed to his decline into poverty and his subsequent death in1826. Hardie was assisted by his son Thomas with instruments from 1824 bearing the label "Hardie & Sons"
Hardie used the long model Stradivarius belonging to Pierre Alday as a template for this violin.
