John Furber (1780 - 1857) was a considerable and versatile craftsman who worked at Turnmill Street in 1810, when this cello was made. A copyist of Stradivari and Amati, he is credited with making most of the instruments for John Betts in the 1840s; one of the most influential figures in English lutherie.
