4/4 Austrian Violoncello, by Andreas Leeb, Labelled "Andreas Carolus Leeb Vienna 1790"
While Vienna was a vibrant centre of European culture and music, throughout the 18th century Viennese violin makers initially took little notice of the groundbreaking innovations of the old Italian masters. Andreas Carl Leeb was the first maker in Vienna to adopt the Stradivari model, preceding Geissenhof. A master of his craft, this beautiful violoncello reflects the style of his earlier work, where he used dark varnish which later turned black.
