Professional Instrument Hire
Thwaites Professional Hire specialise in supplying visiting soloists and orchestras with one or even a section of fine basses. We also hire 'cellos, violins & violas to less a degree.
We have supplied instruments for performances at the BBC Proms, Royal Albert Hall, Festival Hall, Barbican Centre, Symphony Hall etc. as well as for recordings at BBC TV Centre, Abbey Road & CTS. One of our cellos was recently used by Julian Lloyd Webber for ITV's Dancing on Ice, while at the other end of the spectrum, the Foo Fighters used the same instrument for the MTV awards.
When the World Orchestra for Peace performed at the BBC Proms we supplied a section of instruments with specific requirements from each member as to size; shape; number of strings, etc. To ensure the players were completely happy one of our expert luthiers was on site during the rehearsal to make any adjustments.
Our Jazz basses have been used at many of the UK festivals and by visiting players at the Barbican Centre and Festival Hall as well as traditional jazz venues such as Ronnie Scotts & Pizza Express. In the pop world our basses have been used live, for television and radio, and for recording with top artists such as Bob Dylan and Mark Knopfler. With many instruments here to choose from we can match even the most specific player requirements.
For the student market we offer the same level of service with cheaper instruments more suited to the younger player or orchestras on a budget. We regularly supply youth orchestras from the USA, Japan and mainland Europe. One recent requirement was for 13 basses & 26 cellos! Happily we were able to fulfil - even though we had two other groups here at the same time!
We also have a fleet of Double Bass Flightcases for hire at very reasonable rates. Choose from the Stevenson, Gage and our own more compact trunks. These Thwaites-designed cases have evolved over the last 20 years and now sport a special fibreglass / wove mix that is extremely strong and rigid yet is very easy to manoeuvre even by a smaller player.
