4/4 Italian Violin By And Labelled Natale Carletti 1945.

This is a great Italian violin, made by Natale Carletti, son of the maker Carlo Carletti. He trained with his bother Orfeo under his father and became professional in the 1920s. At the start of his career, he produced instruments ‘in the white’ for other makers including Leandro Bisiach and Romeo Antoniazzi. In 1928 their father directed Natale and Orfeo to open a workshop in central Bologna, and after Orfeo died prematurely of a heart attack shortly before their father Carlo, Natale and his younger brother Nullo found themselves in charge of the workshop until its closure around 1936.

Natale’s work is plentiful, and though the Carlettis’ work is not the most famous among modern Italian instruments, their work is seen to be some of the most interesting. Natale was the most highly skilled of the family, known for deeply carved scrolls and full arching. His instruments are often branded ‘CARLETTI’, unlike his father’s. This particular violin plays with a very resonant and clear sound, but also with a character that’s sometimes difficult to find in other similar violins.
