Edward Withers (I) took over an established London violin shop in 1846 which subsequently continued in the same family for over 120 years.  Amongst the great names linked to the business was the fine 19th Century maker John Lott (II).  Others included Georges Chanot (II), George Wulme Hudson, the Voller brothers and other makers associated with the high quality reproduction instruments being made in London at the end of the 19th Century.

Edward Withers (II) was more active as a violin maker than his father being able to draw upon a experienced workshop.  He is said to have produced up to twelve instruments a year, based on the Stradivari and Guarnari models, all displying very fine work.

This lovely 4/4 violin from the workshop of Withers bears the label 'Edward Withers, 22 Wardour Street, London'.
